Public Transport Holidays

Discover another side of Southern Africa

Close Encounters is pleased to introduce a new concept in eco-holidays in Southern Africa - the public transport holiday. Public transport holidays are eco-friendly, economical and provide a completely different view of the country from a conventional holiday.

A Road Less Travelled

A Holiday Like No Other

If you really want to get off the beaten track, we now offer a new and exciting range of trips aimed at the adventurous traveller who wants to experience Africa at close quarters.

Travel by local buses, trains and ferries on your public transport holiday

Our trips are designed with people who have an adventurous spirit in mind. Imagine travelling with the locals by train, bus and boat, seeing Africa through the eyes of the people that live there and exploring destinations no other tourists visit.

This is all with the back up of having a trip leader to steer you in the right direction, and the security of knowing there is a bed available at the end of each day. We use a combination of dorms, bungalows, camping and permanent tents. Most meals are not provided for, so you will be able to use local markets and restaurants.

Africa’s public transport can sometimes be unpredictable and although we do have a loose itinerary, this trip offers an adventure that could change from day to day.

At times it may be dusty, dirty, wet, hot or all of these at the same time! There will be days where we may have to improvise or alter the itinerary due to circumstances beyond our control like floods, droughts, political instability, etc. If you approach your trip with a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude, you and your fellow passengers will get the most out of the journey. Be aware, however, that because of the nature of Africa’s public transport the trips are all fully flexible.

These trips will appeal to any traveller who wants to steer away from the normal overland trips and simply see where their travel leads them. It’s a great opportunity to meet the locals and get an authentic African experience.
